Check whether repeat purchase exists
Private domain works through repeated contact, so customers must buy repeatedly in the first place. High-frequency categories — breakfast, tea, fast food, community retail — see clear lifts in repeat frequency; low-frequency ones such as home furnishing, renovation or weddings suit referrals and reputation. The test is simple: how many times a year does a customer come?
Private domain does only three things
First, bring customers back: coupons, events and new product alerts at a controlled frequency. Second, increase spend: bundles, pairing, stored value. Third, help customers spread the word: reviews, posts, referrals. Do one or two well rather than all three superficially. Many brands turn private domain into an ad group and get muted.
Stores are the entry point
The biggest advantage for chains is the store. Guiding customers at the counter beats online advertising: a word at checkout, a QR code on the table, a card in the delivery bag. The key is giving staff a clear action and reason rather than free interpretation. Head office owns tools, content and rhythm; stores own execution and feedback.
Do not become a coupon channel
If private domain is only coupons, it becomes a price channel and customers only come when there is one. A healthier role includes service: new product previews, store events, member benefits and after-sales. Data should focus on open rate, redemption rate and repeat interval, not headcount. Start with one store and roll out after it works.
